Presentation This former sheriff’s courtroom of the old palace of the Brugse Vrije (the ‘Liberty of Bruges’, an administrative entity comprising the surrounding area, but not the city itself) contains a monumental 16th-century wooden, marble and alabaster chimney-breast in honour of Emperor Charles V, designed by the Bruges artist Lanceloot Blondeel.
